Medical Tourism: Cosmetic Surgery Outside The U.S.
More and more consumers are considering having cosmetic surgery as it rapidly grows in variety of procedures and popularity. A wide range of facilities and providers are available to the public now, including offerings of low-priced packages in foreign countries that are touted as "medical tourism". The low costs sound good, but is it safe to pursue these packages out of the country?
The first ascertation to be made should be about the qualifications of the physician in question. It can be somewhat difficult to learn what training and education a doctor overseas has had, as well as what standards of facilities and equipment are available to them. Research can significantly lessen potential dangers and can be done by contacting professional surgical organizations in the U.S. to inquire about recommended physicians and facilities outside our borders.
The next issue that should be confronted is how post-operative care and recovery be handled. Patients should be aware of the suggested recovery time of their particular procedure, as well as the various risks that are possible. Many cosmetic surgery procedures require at least a week or two of staying "home" followed by limiting any strenuous activity in the following weeks. Some of the more invasive operations require a much longer time of inactivity, but even routine post-operative recovery can take a lengthier "vacation" to finish the healing process.

There is also the question as to whether travel and vacation activities are compatible with a surgical procedure. It may be difficult to spend all your time convalescing and resting while in an exotic locale with attractive activities right outside your door. Most of these activities, such as swimming, hiking, parasailing, or walking long distances should be avoided during a recovery period so as to avoid injury and complications. Also, a long return flight can raise the risk of developing pulmonary embolism, which is a blockage in the pulmonary artery, and blood clots due to the changes in air pressure.
Other issues to be aware of could be how much violent crime is prevalent where the operation will take place, if there are any health concerns such as unclean water or recent outbreaks of disease in the area, or what the political situation might be that could result in a dangerous situation for an American citizen overseas. Many locations that are known for medical tourism are quite stable and safe, such as Spain, Brazil, and South Africa, but it never hurts to do the research and gain a peace of mind about your trip.
All-inclusive vacation packages including cosmetic surgery turn up all over the Internet and can be hard to turn down with their assurances of private hospital services and touted "highly trained and credentialed" medical staff. The low prices they advertise can be too good to pass up when compared to the costs of the same service in this country. Just be careful and remember that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
